Ascent Trip ReportBear Mountain was not my objective, but you have to climb over its summit en route to Pine Log Mountain, which is the Cherokee County high point. In addition, the Bartow County HP is only 200 feet off the trail to Pine Log Mountain, so you can bag two extra high points en route to Pine Log Mountain. I am thankful to The Oesers and Mike Beavers whose trip report informed me that this area is only open on weekends in January. Without their trip report I would have made a long unsuccessful drive from Missouri to a locked gate to this area far from the actual trailhead. Even with an open gate in January, however, you will still have a long hike to the summit of Bear Mountain. The trailhead is at a locked gate with a "5" painted on it and it took me 1.25 hours to hike to the Bartow Co. HP from there and another 14 minutes to reach the summit of Bear Mountain, which has a communication tower complex on top, so the highest point is not easy to identify. There is a good view to the NE from here of Pine Long Mountain, which is probably your actual goal. You can expect another 30 minutes of time to get there and than the long hike back to your car at gate #5. |
