Ascent Trip ReportBM Kilauea is easily accessed from the Jaggar Museum. Walk E on the rim a hundred yards to high ground, stone and metal structure next to BM. Another area to the W of the museum seems close to as high, and I didn't bring a level to Hawaii, but the ranger told me she was sure the BM was the rim's HP. It did look higher to me. There is some built up dirt around the museum which is higher, but it doesn't count. I was initially freaked out by a TR that noted a hike of miles, but that route came from the VC. We simply drove to the museum and it was yards from the parking lot. Great view of the lava, it is really active right now, full crater of orange spurting and burping. We saw the lava flowing into the sea from the E side. 4 mile walk, you can get to about 1/2 to 3/4 mile away, with the stream of orange flowing over and down and in to the sea. Cool..... Go prepared for the heat and sun and wind. Porta-potties about 2/3 of the way out there, nothing at the end but some fencing.
