Ascent Trip ReportRemembrance Day. Got up at 6:30, packed and left at 7:45. Parked at Honister Pass quarry (which was devoted to free parking for the event) and headed for Great Gable. Hiked up the old tramway, turned onto the Gable path at the drum house, then left the stream of people when I turned off onto Moses' Trod. I met no-one along there at all, though in the murk there could have been someone 100 metres (or yards) ahead of or behind me... Eventually came to Gable and headed up (where I met quite a few more people). Got to the top at 10am, an hour early; there were a couple dozen people sitting around. Found a sheltered place to sit and spent an hour drinking my tea, eating, reading Wainwright, and watching people continually materializing out of the mist. At 10:30 I counted the people I could see, about 70 in about a third of the top. I'm sure that by 11 there were 300, if not 400. The service was just a couple
minutes, then a couple minutes of silence, then we all headed down. Crowds funneling into a steady stream going down to Windy Gap, then just a dozen or so of us going up to Green Gable and on down the main Honister Path. Again I turned off, this time to head up Brandreth. I met nobody at all up
there, or on Grey Knotts. Home by 1pm.
