Ascent Trip Report

In the morning I collected my gear, ropes and put on my mountain shoes...
No, just kidding. However, the "ascent" of this peak did take some careful planning, but not as you expect.
First of all, I had to check a Digital Elevation Model to check where the actual highest point on Urk was. Then I had to plan my trip towards Urk. I'm dependent on public transport and Urk is in a bit of an obscure part of the country.

I arrived at the Urk bus-stop in the afternoon. I first walked through the old town and visited the little church "kerkje aan de zee" (churchlet at the sea), which according to the Dutch DEM is the highest point of Urk. Then I walked through the nearby Urkerbos and went back to the churchlet and the neighbouring lighthouse.

Although the "peak" is only 8 meters high. You defenitely see a small hill in the landscape: no wonder, Urk used to be an Island in the shallow Zuiderzee, but since the big land-reclaims of the 20th century Urk isn't an island anymore but is sitting proudly on the top of the hill on the former seabed.
