Ascent Trip ReportThis is part of a two Highpoint trip report for Driskill Mountain and Signal Hill on the tail end of us spending Christmas in Florida.
From Florida we drove to New Orleans on the morning of 12/31/2016 to ring in the New Year in the French Quarter. This was Kelli's first time to NO so we did the flash tour to do as much as we could. We went to Pat O's, went to Cafe DuMonde, Watched the Sugar Bowl parade, went to a Jazz club off of Frenchman's street, drank a hurricane, drank a hand grenade, watched fireworks over the Mississippi river, and some other unmentionable things. ;-)
Driskill Mountain - Highpoint #25
New Years day - we slept in long enough to hopefully reach Mount Zion Presbyterian church with enough time to summit before nightfall. The only mishap we had was missing a turn in Baton rouge. Missing the turn would not have been critical except there was an accident 5 miles up and we lost 45 minutes stuck in traffic that would have been avoided. Luckily I plan for contingencies and we had plenty of time to summit and take photos on Driskill Mountain. We parked at the church and stated walking up the muddy road. You don't get far before the trail veers off to the left. We followed the secondary road up to the gate where there was a sign for a trail. We decided to take the trail but immediately realized we were headed back down and turned around. After crossing through the gate we found the correct trail headed to the high point. The trail drops down to a saddle and then climbs back up to the summit of Driskill where there is a kiosk with summit register and a pile of rocks marking the highpoint. I read there is a USGS marker in the woods, but we could not locate it under the blanket of fallen leaves. On the return we took the trail all the way back. I usually prefer taking trails as opposed to road walking so this is the way I recommend going.
As a side note - Driskill Mountain marks the half-way mark to the full 50 state highpoints for us.
Signal Hill- Highpoint #26
After spending the night in Hot Springs Arkansas we woke up to a foggy drizzly morning as we drove the two hour drive to Magazine Mountain. With the potential for heavy rain and the fact that we had a plane to catch later that afternoon in Little Rock, we drove to the Signal Hill TH at the turnoff for Cameron Bluff campground. Plus with all the fog there was not anything to see by going to the visitors center. We managed to dodge the rain on the hike, but drove through pouring rain on the way to the airport. So we made the right choice not to dilly-dally on the mountain.
