Ascent Trip ReportNote there are two summits. The west summit is 50m SE of the sharp bend in the Laguna Botos trail. This is c.10m lower than the east summit which as per peakbagger is 500m further east involving a bushwhack, mostly fairly easy going but with some dense patches which can be passed generally on the right. HP is a tree in a fairly level area. Morning probably better than afternoon to avoid the crowds, and maybe better visibility. Summit at N10.18439° W84.22498° (GPS).
The park is open 0800 - 1530 with the Laguna Botos trail closing at 1430. Admission 15 USD per person plus 3 USD parking. There was a long queue for the parking lot at midday, wasting over an hour.
We first took the wide paved trail to the crater edge - in cloud, no view down, which to be fair they had told us before taking our fee. We followed the loop trail up past the Laguna Botos overlook. No view here either; most folks turned back here. By the time we got to the highpoint of the trail, where it swings R and descends, there was no one around and we could slip into the forest without raising suspicion. First summit steep and obvious. Then followed the GPS needle down and along the fairly wide ridge, then long gentle ascent with dense brush in places, avoidable. Summit by tree at N10.18439° W84.22498° (GPS) - or one of the other nearby bumps within 30m distance.
We were back at the trail just before the 1430 cutoff time. After some food we went back to the crater rim and got a view of the crater floor, although not the full 300m down to the lake. Drove down to Alajuela for the night. Cortez Azul a clean basic place where we stayed 2 nights, with Volcan Barva nearby for tomorrow.
