Ascent Trip ReportThis is yet another approach to Mormon Peak that requires 4WD and high clearance, but does not pass through private property or run into locked gates.
At the intersection of Hwy 168 and Meadow View Road, drive 10.4 miles north on Meadow View Road to a big sign saying a locked gate is ahead. Just a few feet beyond this sign is a BLM post on the right saying "Designated Route". Put vehicle into 4WD and take this route 4.7 miles to an obscure road junction. This section involves a stream crossing only a few hundred feet from the "designated route" sign that was at least 18 inches deep when we crossed it (only a few days after a storm dumped snow and rain in the area). This was soon followed by one or two more "Designated Route" signs to keep drivers on the right path. The main track then goes along a wash with deep sand. After fish-tailing through the sand for a good 4+ miles, the track leaves the wash and reaches the aforementioned obscure road junction on more solid ground. Veer left here staying on the main track and go 1.1 miles to another road junction that comes in from the left. Go right at this junction driving towards Mormon Peak for another 6.2 miles to a turn-out on the right to park just before the dirt road nearly disappears into a large wash. This is where others have reported parking for the climb.
AS others have done, we hiked up the large wash to the ruins indicated on the topo map. Headed north past the ruins for 1/2 mile then onto a ridge eventually reaching a gully about 1/3 of a mile west of the peak. THis gully was loose and scrubby, so we exited where we could onto the ridge west of the peak. Travel was better here, although we had 4-6 inches of soft snow to slosh through.
After a brief summit stay, we followed the ridge further down to the 5800 ft level where we crossed a saddle and dropped into the wash just west of the one with the "ruins" that we had gone up. The travel was easier in this wash, and we eventually merged with the main wash and soon reached the Jeep.
