Ascent Trip ReportThis was a "peak" that I had been meaning to climb while still living in Potsdam, but no such luck. So, I camped a Blue Jay Campsite on Rte. 30 in Tupper Lake the night before and went up to Wanakena to finally get this hike in before heading south to Old Forge. The hike itself is really easy, along a gravel/dirt road on the Ranger School property and then the last 0.3 miles on a foot path to the tower. It is pretty easy to get off course here with all the side roads and different turns, so the map and hike description in "Views from on High" by John P. Freeman can be really helpful. It also appeared that just past the front gate by the trailhead, there's a sign for the Latham Trail to the summit. The hike was short and easy and gave me #16 in the Fire Tower Challenge. |
