Ascent Trip Report

What a way to end the year, with the toughest Hike/Peak of the year. We started this hike at Mt Wilson. Took the Mt Wilson trl down to the Wilson toll rd and then back on to Wilson trl heading down and took Winter Creek trl down along the eastside of the ridge. When the trail turned east we scrambled 25 ft up the side to the ridge and followed it up to the summit. Then doubled back north along the ridge. The trail turns west off the ridge and at the corner of the switchback is the ridge going down to Lookout Point. It was solid bushes. We started out pushing thru but after about 100 ft it got to thick,so we crawled the next 600 feet under the bushes. This took about 2hrs and a lot of cuts and punctures two ripped up shirts and one destroyed hat. We made it to the 1st gully and it started to rain hard, went down and edged south around to the next gully south. Then over to the ridge making it to Lookout Point. Jumped back into the gully and slid in the dirt down to the bottom.Followed the canyon out to the main canyon (by now there were a few waterfalls and a ton of orange Salamanders). At the main canyon the GPS showed we were only 50 ft east of the Mt Wilson trl,so we climbed a small 6 ft rock wall and scrambled up the mud and grass to the trail. My husband's hat was almost ripped in half his pack was in tatters and with a the sticks and leaves in his hair he looked liked the scarecrow from "the Wizard of OZ" We hiked about a 1/8 mile north and found that the canyon met the trail. We must have looked pretty bad because there were some other hikers there resting and they asked us if we needed help. We thanked them and said no. But the sign there said 3.5 miles back to Mt Wilson and we had nothing left in us,but we had no choice. We were so tired it took 2.5 hr to get back to the car. The last mile it poured rain and it was dark for the last 15 mins. We changed our wet clothes and headed down to Pinocchio Restaurant in Burbank for a nice hot dinner.
