Ascent of Corkscrew Peak on 2016-12-10
|Date:||Saturday, December 10, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5804 ft / 1769 m|
Ascent Trip ReportAn excellent Death Valley backcountry peakbag. There are two routes up this peak the Wash (Classic DPS) route and Ridge route. I climbed via the Ridge route. See the Summitpost page (linked from the peak page) for the differences. I loaded Mr. Morehouse's GPS track from November 11, 2016 and found it be very accurate for the Ridge route. If you park at the broad pullout on the north side of the road ~0.5 miles downhill from the Corkscrew Peak brown NPS sign the Ridge route begins following the wash from the parking area back uphill paralleling Daylight Pass Road (not up the use trail up the embankment). After about 1/4-1/2 mile off the road you should encounter obvious ducked use trail. From then on with some occasional route finding it's smooth sailing. I lost the trail for a bit in the broad wash but otherwise this might as well have been a maintained trail. Occasional loose footing up high. Standard GPS silver ammo can and logbook on the summit. Class 2 with no significant exposure.
