Ascent Trip Report

At the time I thought it was 14,049 ft. high
Nov 17 1990 Saturday. I got a breakfast of Huevas con Tocina, walked to the Boulevard and caught a Zaragoza bus to CAPU in Puebla. There I took a bus to Perote. Good looking country. In Perote I wandered around looking for a bus to Los Altos. I didn't find it. I took a taxi to Conejo, 90000 MN, over $30.00 The taxi driver said that Cofre was two hours up the road. I hiked an hour up the road, into the cloud cap, and set up an uncomfortable camp in a light steady rain.
Nov 18 1990 Sunday. The rain cleared off overnight. I hiked up to the Cofre, about two hours. The easiest route up the rock is occupied by a concrete staircase, the second easiest is threaded by electric cables. Everything else needed a rope. I went up the staircase. I had seen many memorials to fallen climbers. From the top I got excellent views of six of Mexico's mountains over 14,000 ft. I also climbed the
south peak of the mountain. I felt fatigued.
I refilled my bottle at a spring, descended, dried and packed my camp and headed down. I quickly hitched in the back of a firewood truck to Conejo. I continued walking, hitched another ride, to the turnoff to Rancho Nueva (?), walked some more and hitched another ride. Etc.
