Ascent Trip ReportFriday Apr 24 1987. Winfried got us up at 3:00 am and after a snack we were out the door at 3:35 am. I had worn long johns to bed and I wore them outside. It was not as cold as I had expected. It was easy to follow the road, except where it crossed gullies. We got to Las Cruces (ruined) before dawn, stopped for breakfast a few hundred feet higher and they put on crampons. I climbed up someone else's descent path and kept a good rate. Eventually that was blown over, the snow got powdery and they got to the rim. I had to stop, remove long johns, put on crampons. I got to the rim at 9:05 am. I had no headache, mild (usual) nausea and couldn't go 20 steps before stopping to let the heart and lungs catch up. On the last slope I passed Todd (he claimed the sulfur was overpowering) and got on top at 10:07 am. After half-an-hour we returned as we came. I collected a little garbage at Las Cruces. They returned ahead and I got back at about 1:00 pm. |
