Ascent Trip ReportFrom the Quaking Aspen Campground (intersection of CA 190 and Great Western Hwy) between campsites 23 and 24 a prominent spur path leads to FSR 21S78, which soon comes to the signed Summit Tr, a National Recreation Tr. After approx 4.5 miles from Quaking Aspen, the trail crests at 9,000' and a use trail starts here for the final 0.4 mile-approach to Slate Mountain. In less than 1/4 mile the use trail gives out to a heavily bouldered slope, which was too demanding for my knee. I returned to the saddle and waited while Dave completed his ascent to the rocky summit of Slate Mountain. I was naturally frustrated to have come so close (within 150') yet unable to bag the relatively easy peak. To the right of the talus field was a steep, chinquapin-covered slope which Dave descended. It was too steep and too much of a bushwhack for me to consider today, |
