Ascent Trip ReportIron Hill is readily visible from I-95. Exit 1A at Rte 896/South College Ave, first R onto Old Baltimore Pike.
It was late morning and the county park was open so we elected to walk its trails rather than the quicker/lazier "walk" from Lyman Lookout Rd.
Nice info signs at the park parking lot re native Americans, settlers, iron mining, the hill's role in the Philadelphia Campaign (Aug 25-Sept 10, 1777) and the Battle of Cooch's Bridge (or Iron Hill).
The trail you want is at the NE corner of the parking area, just L of the gazebo. 5 or 10 easy minutes later you reach a junction with the 30 sec walk R to the tower. About a 1000 foot walk to reach the tower. The summit is all flat, the ground obviously has been altered, and there is no distant views.
You can download a copy of the Iron Hill County Park's trail guide at:
As it was raining we elected to skip going to some of the 17 historic sites within the park.
When you leave if you go W and rejoin I-95 at Rte 279 you can avoid the Delaware Turnpike toll.
