Ascent Trip ReportThe Plan: I was visiting Denver for an extended weekend vacation where I planned to do a lot of hiking. My main goal of the trip was Mount Elbert, with Pikes Peak and/or Blanca Peak also on my radar. On Saturday I landed relatively early, but too late to try Elbert or others on my radar. I was planning to stay with my old roommate, and his wife suggested that I hike near the flint rocks Saturday if I had time. This is what I did.
Parking: Chautauqua Park was full, so I parked on a nearby street.
The hike: Prior to getting to the park I didn't have much information on the trails. When I walked into the park I stopped at a map and took a picture of it. I saw Green Mountain on the map and decided that's where I'd go. Early on the trails were very crowded, I started by going short distances on the streets to the park and Chautauqua and Baseline trails (1.0 miles).
Next I turned onto the Amphitheater trail. Starting here there were fewer people and steepness began. (0.4 miles, 1.4 total). After this I connected to Sliding Rock trail. Starting here I had a handful of views of snow capped peaks in the distance. (0.7 miles, 2.1 total)
Following this I took a left onto the E.M. Greenman trail. The views of the snow capped peaks became more frequent with wider views. Finally I reached the top of Green Mountain where there were roughly 6-7 groups of people hanging out and taking in the views. The high point is on a small rock outcropping. I climbed up this and took a handful of photos. There's a plate marked with the surrounding peaks and their elevation marked. (0.95 miles, 3.05 total)
I turned around and and returned via the same route, except I stayed on Sliding Rock this time bypassing the Amphitheater trail. (3.2 miles, 6.25 total)
During this hike I had about 5 runners pass me by.
Weather: Weather was unseasonably warm in Colorado, I completed this hike in a T-shirt and thin pants and was comfortable the entire time. This was a worthwhile hike for a short day.
Notes: The trails were crowded early on, and far from empty in the later steeper sections.
