Ascent Trip ReportI climbed Little Bald, Chimney Top and Double Knob with my husband in one trip. Miles are estimate as Map my Hike disagrees with GPS miles. My miles start at bathroom in parking lot of Brasstown Bald, my total time was 7.5 hrs and total miles are 11.91. We got started at 11:00 am and hiked Wagon Train Trail which goes to the right off the paved trail to summit of Brasstown Bald. We followed the ridgeline on the right at 0.9 miles to get summit of Little Bald. The vegetation wasn't bad and we made good time.We cut back to the west to get back on trail, this can be steep in spots as there is a 20 foot cliff that blocks the way down for most of this part of the trail. Total time was 45 minutes.
The next climb was Chimney Top. We left the trail at about 3 miles on a ridgeline to the right, there is a turn in the trail and a campsite here. We headed east back up the ridge to the summit at 0.3 miles. It is very steep and the vegetation was extremely thick. We basically crawled through some parts and there are briars! When you get close to the top there are some rocky areas covered in lichen....this is not the summit keep going. The summit is wooded but not as thick here, not much of a view but still worth it.
We went back the way we came because the terrain is so steep. Total time for this climb was 1 hour.
We left the trail at 4.9 miles to get to Double Knob on an obvious ridgeline and headed NE . It is steep but vegetation is not too thick, the summit is 0.9 miles from trail. We stayed to the left on the ridge and there is a steep drop on the left part of the way up. We came to what I thought (and hoped) was the summit but of course it wasn't, hence the name. It's the first of the double knobs and we headed east up it to the actual summit. The views are good and it is quite pleasant. We headed down and went the wrong direction on the lower knob, we went more NW instead of SW because there were two ridges to descend. We corrected our mistake and the rest of descent was fairly easy. Total time to climb was 1 hour and 30 minutes to descend.
Total ascent for trip-2019 ft.Max elevation-4430 ft, min elevation-3208 ft.
