Ascent Trip ReportA road walk eastbound ... 1.5 miles, 37 minute RT.
This is day 1 of our 10 day county high pointing trip to WV/VA, the main goal being WV's Kayford Mountain in Kanawha County - my only outstanding COHP in WV ( I would not succeed). For this first day's drive down we took in a few small hikes on-route - a drive up to Petersburg Mountain and a short hike to Penobscot Mountain as reported here.
We planned this trip for this time for the fall colors - same as time as last year's trip. We would be greatly disappointed as the fall colors have not peaked.
We travelled southbound on I-81 to exit 165 (hwy #309 Mountain Top, Wilkes-Barre) where we went south on 309 for 3.8 miles to a left on Woodland avenue, just over the crest of 309. At 200 yards east turned left on Lehigh Street, .3 miles north turned right onto the small Sterling Street then parked at 200 yards just past house #20. Ahead is a yellow gate and on the left a green gated road with a bunch of signs, my hiking route to the summit.
I climbed the green gated road easterly .75 miles to the E-W summit ridge, full of Communication Towers (perhaps 12).
The obvious HP is capped with a Lookout Tower whose stairs should be blocked-off (dangerous), I found 2 BM's "PENOBSCOT 1929". You are rewarded with an outstanding 360 degree panorama.
