Ascent Trip Report This was a scheduled hike of a Peakbagger bump and a Lower Peak. My co-leaders were Pat Vaughn and Pat Arredondo. Joining us was Mario Mari-Chous, Bill Faulkner, Winnette Butler, Rich Wilson and Tanya Roton. This is without a doubt the hardest hike in the Lower Peak Section. The stats are mis-leading. It says only 6 miles round trip, 2300’. Most of the 2300’ comes in two short sections., from Mission Creek to the ridge and from the start of the ridge to Arlington. The second section involves a lot of boulder hopping. The peak guide directions were accurate, exit 101 at Garden St/Laguna St, turn right at Mission, then left on Laguna, right on Los Olivos, continue pass the Mission Santa Barbara. Los Olivos becomes Mission Canyon. Follow it to Foothill, turn right, then left at the first stop sign. You will see a fire station on your right. Continue up Mission Canyon to a fork with Tunnel Dr. Follow Tunnel Dr. to a turnaround at the end. This is where the trail starts. Parking is atrocious here. We had to park about ¼ mile and 100’ gain to the trailhead.
The hiking direction are accurate. Start on paved road, follow it about ¾ mile to a wooden bridge, cross the bridge and continue on and short the paved road becomes a dirt road. Follow it a short distance and you will see a sign for Tunnel Trail and Jesusita Trail. Follow the dirt road, pass the Tunnel trail on your right, continue on the dirt road to a point where it turns to the right. You will a trail starting here. This is the Jesusita Trail. There was no sign. Follow the trail to where it drops down into Mission Creek. At this point be careful. You will see a nice trail going straight. Don’t follow it. It goes to Inspiration Point. Instead, look to your right and you will see a faint use trail starting on the left. This is the first steep part, going about 700’ in a 1/3 of a mile. No boulder hopping in this section. The trail is obvious and easy to following. One on the ridge, the fun begins. It is very steep, 1000’ in 6/10th of a mile. It involves a lot of route finding. Sometime the route is obvious, other times not so. Any there are a lot of boulders to climb over. From Arlington to Cathedral, there is a good trail to the summit of Cathedral. Return the same way.
