Ascent Trip Report

Dean called ahead to the Ojai ranger station to get the gate code to drive in Nordhoff Road about halfway to Hines Peak. On a warm Saturday we drove in on steep but well-maintained dirt roads to the gate. We walked along the Red Reef Trail, clearly a former road, several miles to a saddle at about 6000 feet on the northwest ridge of Hines Peak. The slope started as loose dirt, then reached a 50 foot stretch where both sides had eroded to create a knife edge. Fortunately there are some shrubs growing here for grip, and people have kicked in steps. Getting past this was exposed but safe with careful foot placements. Above here, several use trails led up at various angles through scree, and above that were short stretches over very loose rock. This section was worse than the knife edge. After reaching a false summit, it’s an easy walk over to the true summit, where there’s a register and a benchmark.

The climb had been tiring and we were a little worried about the descent, but it turned out to be fairly straightforward. On the way back we went left at a junction to climb an unnamed P300, and then Topatopa Bluff, which is disappointing as a climb but has good views. A forest service trail led back via switchbacks to the car. Avoid leaving the trail for a more vertical descent down a loose chute where the trail switchbacks sharply on the right side.

On the drive out we stopped at Peak 5226 with communications equipment on top. We had intended to climb Chief Peak, too, but ran out of daylight.
