Ascent Trip Report

I climbed Tremont during peak foliage time. The Mt. Tremont Trail was full of it! Colorful leaves covered the pathway as well as the trees. The walk along Stony Brook in the beginning was very nice; the water level was surprisingly high. There is one excellent cascade pouring from between two rocks that definitely deserves a name (like "Pitcher Falls"). I began to see some color on nearby hillsides when the trail started climbing. I knew the foliage would be excellent. There were several glimpses toward the Presidential Range and Crawford Notch in the switchbacks. I was hoping there would be views in this direction from the top, but there are not. Just before the summit, the trail gets very steep!

The foliage in the view from the summit was absolutely breathtaking! The color was improved by the interesting features in the valley below, like Sawyer Ponds and Green's Cliff. The summit ledges have an excellent view over the valley on the eastern side of the Kancamagus Highway and to the Sandwich Range beyond. You can also see to the west toward Osceola, Kancamagus, Huntington, and Hancock. There is also an excellent view of Carrigain, which looks massive from this close.

After taking in the colors for an hour, I decided to extend my hike to Owl's Cliff. I headed down the extremely steep Brunel Trail, which did not appear to receive much use at all. After reaching the wide col, it was an easier climb to Owl's Cliff. The Owl's Cliff does not have much of a different view, and it's not nearly as nice (although the steep cliff is interesting), so I don't think it is worth the extra effort. On the way back, I stepped through the trees to touch the summit and found a summit register. I wonder what list this is on...
