Ascent Trip ReportThis was a private hike. Joining me for the first 2 hikes was Winnette Butler. Our first hike was Topanga LO and Fossil Ridge. To get there we took Stunt road from Mulholland Highway to Schueren Road and parked at a vista point. We started up the road to Topanga LO and within ¼ mile; we came to a trail, Fossil Ridge Trail. We started on this trail and in a short distance, we saw a use trail going off to the left. We followed this steep and loose trail to the ridge at 2500’. We continued to follow the use trail to the high point. We did not find any register or benchmark. We continued on the trail and it came out at the microwave towers. There was a guard in the shack, but he just gave us a friendly wave. From the towers we follow the paved road down to the Topanga Motorway, turned right and hiked out to the Lookout. There is no lookout, just a big cement pad with some nice murals painted on it. We returned to the car via the Topanga Motorway.
We drove back down Stunt Road to MM 2.83. At this point there is a connector trail that takes you to the Backbone Trail, where we turned left and followed past some interesting rock formation and to a junction with a road. The Backbone trail starts down at this point. We followed this road, which became a trail about 1/10 mile to a junction. We turned right and hiked up to the towers on Saddle Peak West. The gate was opened and we were able to hike to high point where we saw a BM on the other side of a fence. We continued back down the road to the junction and went straight to the sort distance to Saddle Peak East. There was a bench on the summit and since it was a Lower Peak, we left a register on the summit.
Our next objective was Malibu Creek State Park High Point. I had the coordinates in my GPS. We went back to the Backbone Trail, turned right and followed it about 1/3 mile where we found a use trail. We started up this use trail, but we soon realized it was heading to Saddle Peak East. My waypoint was close; however, the waypoint was only putting us at about 2400’, far short of the 2825’ listed on Peakbagger. When I got home, I finally figured out that the Malibu Creek State Park High Point is actually on the Saddle Peak East plateau. The red circle on Peakbagger for Malibu Creek is in wrong spot.
Winnette left me when we got back to the cars and I did Calabasas solo. I follow the Calabasas Motorway up to the summit where I found a register and benchmark. I returned the same way, picking up Red Peak Canyon Overlook on the way down. I was going to try to get Red Rock Peak (2031’), however I could not find any use trail leading out to the peak. It was late, I was tired and I decided to leave it for another day.
