Ascent Trip ReportI drove with Michelle to the Gale River Trailhead and started hiking alone at 7 AM. Michelle met a couple of hikers that were driving to Garfield Mtn TH and she decided to go with them to climb that peak also.
The first 4 miles of my hike were on the Gale River Trail (blue markers) and they were pretty easy. I went from 1,700 ft elevation to 3,500 ft very gradually. I reached the intersection at 9 AM. To my right was the Garfield Ridge Trail (where Michelle will be coming from) and to my left was the Twinway Trail leading to the Galehead Hut and the spur to Galehead Mtn, which is were I went.
After 0.6 miles I reached the hut (it was 9:15 AM), which looked empty from the outside but, according to what Michelle will tell me later on, was going to get very crowded as the day went along. I didn't go inside, and continued towards the top of Galehead, which I reached at 9:40 AM. There was a pile of rocks indicating the top, but no views to speak of. This was the shortest of the 3 peaks I was climbing today, at 4.024 ft. I retraced my steps from here down the mountain back towards the hut. Then I went to my right onto the Twinway.
On this trail there was a quick descent of 200 ft and after that a relentless ascent of 1,100 ft in half a mile to the top of South Twin. It was 11:05 AM. There was a decent crowd of hikers on this nice fall day, so I didn't stay long. The views were very nice! I follow the signs towards North Twin. I descended 450 ft to the col and then proceeded to climb 200 ft to the top of North Twin which I reached at 12:02 PM, 1.3 miles from South. I stopped for lunch and to take a few pictures. It was a little breezy, but nice.
After the break, I retraced my steps back to the Gail River parking lot, which I reached at 4:20 PM. Michelle made it 10 minutes later.
The final tally was this: 3 peaks. 14.5 miles and 4,675 ft of elevation gain in 9h 20 min.
