Ascent Trip Report

NOTE: This entry is for the climb of East Osceola on the return from Osceola since technically I climbed we climbed it twice.

Out and back day hike with Brenda. Started at Greeley Pond Trail beginning on the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) in Lincoln, New Hampshire. Went over East Osceola to Osceola and returned via East Osceola so technically 3 summits in one day. Weather was wet with light drizzle and very little visibility. Temps were mostly in the 50s with cooler temps and wind at the summit. We did the summit of East Osceola first and then proceed another mile to the summit of Osceola. The rocks leading to East Osceola would have been challenging if it had been dry out but it was even more challenging with then all being wet. Coming back down via the same route was difficult as our legs were really fatigued. Poles might have helped a bit but there would have been times they would have been in the way. Leather or at least more rugged gloves would have been useful for the rocks on the technical sections. The "Chimney" section leading to Osceola was the most challenging of the climb. We did not see a slightly easier bypass to the chimney on the way up but we saw it on the way down and it was a bit easier. We had looked for it on the way up when we saw the chimney but we looked for it just a little bit too early. There were several others on the trail and several groups on the summit despite the less than ideal conditions.

Logistics: We left Chelmsford at 7:00 AM (ran 3 miles at 6:00 AM), stopped at St Anselm's for Brenda to pick up a few items and then got to trail for 10:00. We hiked until 4:30 with only minor stops. On the way home we hit Subway and Dunks

Lessons Learned: Items for next time: Leather or tough pair of gloves, Advil, poles

Note: I wore my full LL Bean hikers and was concerned that they might be overkill but in the end I was very pleased with the stability and protection they provided.
