Ascent Trip ReportThe trailhead area of this hike begins at the Road Prong Trailhead Parking Area on the TN side of Clingman's Dome Road (on the right about a quarter down the road to Clingman's Dome Parking Area). From the parking area, the AT is unnamed but it is the 2nd of what looked to be 4 trailheads (it is the trail directly to the left of the Road Prong trailhead.). A friend and I hiked from the trailhead to Clingman's Dome and back following the AT. Approximately 3.2 miles from the trailhead, the AT crosses the summit of Mt.Collins (there was no noticeable sign for the summit). The hike ascended gradually uphill most of the way to Mt. Collins/Clingman's Dome but was not extremely difficult if compared to some other very steep trails in the Smokies. If you enjoy the smell of pine trees, hiking through old growth forest areas, and trails that are regularly traveled but on the less crowded side compared to others in the Smokies, this hike is for you. If you continue on passed Mt. Collins, you will begin to see some amazing views on and off on both sides of the trail. From Mt. Collins, my friend Maria and I continued on the AT to Clingman's Dome and returned via the same route.
