Ascent Trip Report

i've been wanting to bag san jacinto almost since i started peakbagging a year ago. i wussed out a few times in the winter: unsure of my abilities in the snow/ice. last week i decided it was time for san jacinto (and san antonio) and booked flight+car. after booking those i looked at the tram website and discovered the tram is closed in september for annual maintenance! i was a bit bummed, but stuck with the trip, figuring i'd bag some other P2k instead.

when i was taking a break on the summit of mount san antonio friday i ended up chatting with some more experienced local hikers. one of them mentioned the marion mountain trail. after poking around on my phone in the peakbagger app i decided it looked quite reasonable (as opposed to, say, doing C2C without the tram!). with the tram closed it would also mean smaller crowds on san jacinto. so my plans were back on.

i picked up the san jacinto wilderness permit at the idyllwild ranger station (8am-4pm).

the trail is in great shape, and there were a dozen or so other parties on it. i decided to bag some other HPS peaks on the way up and down (although i will still have to return some day for a few i couldn't fit in). i enjoyed the boulder hopping and scrambling opportunities on all of the peaks. i'm quite happy with this approach.

statistics include all the side trips and rest breaks.
