Ascent Trip Report

Various routes available. Easiest (used by many locals, from NE, is to drive track to xxxx, parking just before bridge, and follow paint marked trail initially through woodland, reaching ridge and turning R to reach summit with its buildings and comms mast. Memorial cairn beyond appears slightly lower.

For a circuit including the Rocky Trail (NE ridge, easy scramble) drive track to xxxx (picnic table) and take paint marked path signposted Hotel Molika. This gentle ascent reaches remains of Kopanki mountain hut xxxx; Rocky Trail route goes R here (L descends to Hotel Molika trailhead), contours for a while then slightly obscure R turn xxxx zigzags up thru pines to reach wooden viewpoint platform. Paint marked trail continues up bouldery ridge with frequent easy bouldery scrambling (YDS 2+) and occasional cable protection. Leads over subsidiary summit Stiv 2468m to reach main summit. For descent, return short way along ridge to first col; wooden post marks tourist path which descends L. At stream crossing watch for path which traverses L away from stream, waymarked all the way down to main track; turn R to return to picnic table trailhead.

Also route(s) available from SE.

After our Kendrevices ascent, we'd hoped to climb Nemercka, but don't have time for the Albanian ascent and long drive back to Skopje, and discover a Greek ascent isn't feasible. So we climb Pelister, new for Pete, one I'm happy to repeat.

We sleep at the parking area at sharp bend xxxx below Molika Hotel; next morning drive up to hotel trailhead xxxx. From there to ruined Kopanki mountain hut, then keeping R we take trail between buildings, which gently descends to join the track (which serves the summit buildings) at a picnic table xxxx. Turn L here on main track and at xxxx take path L signposted Pelister. Nice ascent in cool early morning.

We descend via the Rocky Trail (NE Ridge), enjoyable boulder hopping in nice dry conditions. A few other folk around, this being a weekend. 3h20 up, 6h30 round trip.

Down in forest, excellent view of a Nutcracker family, squeaky confiding youngsters. Other wildlife includes black woodpecker, black redstart and some partridges which we've seen frequently over the last 2 weeks but not identified.

To Petrovec for Lovija motel, a few mins from SKP with early flight back to UK next morning.

Pete and I bagged 6 ultras in the last six days including 2 long hikes and some long drives; previous week less successful but 9 Balkans ultras in total, with just Nemercka left for another time.
