Ascent Trip ReportWe were visiting family in the Boulder Heights subdivision. Their home looks towards the Continental Divide and the nearest peak in that direction is Butzel Hill. It was a pleasant day for hiking and we started at their home on Overlook Lane. We walked along Overlook Lane to Mine Lane and then down the emergency evacuation road to Sunshine Saddle ( elevation 7480 ft.). From the saddle we walked a short distance up a private drive where the trail to the summit immediately heads off to the right. The trail up from the saddle is steep in places but affords good views towards Boulder and the skyscrapers of Denver. The summit consists of a rock pile and offers good views towards the Continental Divide including Mt. Audobon and Longs Peak. We cut 0.75 miles off the return trip by going up a private trail to Overlook Lane from Sunshine Saddle.
One can ascend Butzel Hill by driving to and parking at Sunshine Saddle or by parking on Mine Lane and hiking down to the saddle. If parking on Mine Lane, it is easy to add a side trip to Lee Hill. |
