Ascent Trip Report

3h30 round trip from Vihren hut (trailhead, car park). Nice meal in Bansko then slept in car, further down road as quite a chilly night.

Vihren signposted from car park, the right hand of several trails. Also another signed fork L a little further up, then steep rocky trail relents and climbs L across a bowl, sharp R on a little spur to another signpost then short level stretch leads to zigzag trail up steep rocky summit cone.

HP marked with a battered concrete trig pillar, small metal lattice tower nearby. Summit in cloud, cold wind, a little snow lying with more forecast. We traverse short summit ridge SE then head back down. A few folk heading up including a Bulgarian guided party and two small french groups.

3 chamois, a very confiding alpine accentor, also heard ring ouzel and black redstart.

Left trailhead soon after 11, clouds descending and soon raining, we caught weather window nicely. Rest of day drive 10hrs via Kosovo into Albania for Jezerkes tomorrow. Border crossing into Macedonia took a while: they wanted all the bags out and went thru absolutely everything. Kosovo and Albania borders very easy as we'd also found a week ago. Unsurprisingly it's the EU border which is tricky at present.
