Ascent Trip Report

Imperial County HP - super easy to access this one. Take HWY 8 from SD then exit at Old Hwy 80 and turn right. The access road is the first turn off to the left. The road going up really is not that bad if you have a decent 4wd, contrary to most of the TR's I've read. It's pretty rough in spots but nothing too crazy. I honestly could have driven to the divide where the road splits and Blue Angels is off to the left. However, we arrived after sunset and the roads looked more sketchy than they actually were, so we parked at a turn well up the road at around 3,500ft. It's very strange around here, there are water jugs all over the place on this road and messages in Spanish like "que Dios te acompañe" (may God be with you). There are so many jugs of water (every 200 feet or so) that it seemed to me like they were planted there by the Border Patrol... This is my conspiracy-driven mind thinking. But it just seemed too convenient to me. Needless to say, this is a very odd and interesting place.

We hiked up the road and continued up towards the blinking radio towers. We had headlamps. However, we missed the left turn we were supposed to take to make it up towards the highpoint. Having reached the towers, we decided it was not worth trying to do any boulder-hopping in the dark to make the approach to Blue Angels. Curse these 7pm sunsets!

After gazing at the stars (Milky Way in full view) we walked it back down to the Geo. Fun stuff taking the Tracker down the rough road. Definitely utilized the 4wd.

Not worth putting the GPS file in because it's totally misleading.
