Terry M. drove us up very nasty 4WD road to 4WD trailhead. potholes, rocks, streamcrossings galore. Good trailhead camping opps, as well as along the road. Outhouse locked Hike up starting at 530am was through nice forest with good trail. Treeline about 11600', easy to follow trail. Passed intersection trail to Matterhorn creek and Stock Driveway trail. Trail up ridge was good. Several steep couloirs, but none had much snow. Final summit had a few rocks, but easily walked. We were the first to summit that morning. Summit very flat, great views on a very clear morning. North Face steep to overhanging. Met several nice people on top, including a new wilderness ranger new to the area. We tried to identify Vertical East slope peak to south, later identified as Pigeon Peak. Also, Redcloud, Sunshine and Handies (or perhaps Whitecross). Didn't identify where Roaches Snow Climb couloirs might have entered the peak, but reviewing afterwards, they were apparently not the couloirs lower down the cliff, as expected. Scouting from the Matterhorn pass on 7/2, determined that there wasn't any kind of a continuous snow route up Uncompahgre's West slopes, so didn't look very hard for a glissade down. Hike down, we took an abandoned trail to the West, to cut off a long swing to the East, appears to be something like Roach's 2V route.. Terry went back down to Nellie Creek. Appears the longer main trail we skipped was still a bit shorter than USGS trail location. Roach map confirms this. does NOT have Matterhorn Creek to Uncompahgre route at all! Met a guy who had takent the most southern reasonable couloir, who said it had a faint trail down it....reviewing the map, Roaches route 3 snowclimb, a much m=northerly couloir.

Remainder of hike down, fairly uneventfully. The trail got lost in the meadow a few times, but did run across a sign at the intersection of Stock Driveway trail, and Matterhorn Creek trail.
