Ascent Trip Report

This was my favorite of the 3 parks I visited this morning in the rain. This is not in the main body of the Tomoka State Park but on the northern finger on the island. The actual state park HP is to the south. We paid a $4 fee to enter this state park whereas Bulow State Park had no fee. This park was more interesting in that it had access to waterways of varying depth and size, a steep ridgeline along the water, some varying ecological communities, and some fine history to read about. My favorite park was knowing that the ground we were hiking on had some real FL history. The point was the site of an old plantation that was granted in the mid 1700s before the revolutionary war from mother England. The point was also a known named village of the Timacuon Indians going back to the 1600s.

Willie and I jogged the trails and checked out the waterways but in the end, the relentless rain and mosquitoes cut our Saturday state park outing short and we just found the third and final highpoint on the point (the 3rd closed contour above elevation 15) and headed out, water logged, and missing a lot of blood. The first two closed contours are encountered by way of the drive out to the park and only the last one really requires a bit of a bushwhack to claim.

I would come back and hike in this park with Willie in fall-winter when it is cooler and rain and mosquitoes are not so prevalent.
