Ascent Trip ReportI enjoy finding places on public property to hike and this beats finding highpoints in county areas where there are private properties with multiple candidate points. Sometimes the highpoints on public parks turn out to be a great journey and other times not so much. If finding a caramel interior chocolate is the exciting surprise in the box of chocolates, for me, this park was finding crusty old coconut filled chocolate. The park turns out to be county park (Volusia County) not a state park although it is adjacent to Bulow Creek State Park and looks like it a part of Bulow it is a separate park dedicated to Ormond who settled the area and Ormond Beach is named after. His grave site form the early 1800s is the highlight of the park. The park is flat and the potential HP is likely in the SW corner next to the golf course. There is not trail to it from the improved park so it is a thick bushwhack.
It was raining because if the hurricane that had just passed (after bands) and the golden orb web spiders where far to many. But what really made this journey a solid yuck rated 1 out of 10 was the proliferation of blood sucking mosquitoes. The hurricane must have blown a billion into the area and they were mean and thirsty. I usually find something curious or interesting in these highpointing journeys or at least find a way to get a reasonable amount of hiking exercise for me and the hound. Not today. This site was a bust and I see no reason to return. Then off to check out the many nearby state parks.
