Ascent Trip Report

The revenge of Mount Brietenbach!! Chad and I left at 0600 for this adventure, and we were in the correct canyon this time even. The directions made much better sense coming in from the correct way... Original plan was to knock out 2 of the Idaho 12ers this day. We wanted to traverse from Mount Breitenbach to Los River Peak to the west. I seemed to have a rough start on this trip, I really feared that I was going to bonk. Unfortunately, Chad had to deal with me taking excessive breaks throughout this entire climb. After exiting the canyon into the open scree field we kept trying to keep an eye on the talus and cliff covered west face of Lost River Peak looking for a possible route across. At this point it was not looking good. We started ascending to the northwest and eventually straight west. This was very steep and contained very small cliffs, and proved pretty difficult to gain elevation very quickly. It took some time but we eventually made it to the South Ridge of Mount Breitenbach prior to the false summit. Here we grabbed a bite to eat and took in the views from where we had attempted from last time. We could also see Donaldson, No regret Peak, and Church from this location. We then continued on the ridge gaining the summit at about 1130. This was a rewarding moment to be able to return and succeed. The views were spectacular and the north face of this peak was even more incredible. We were however reluctant to find a way to traverse to Lost River Peak. After realizing how late it was and that I still wasn't feeling the greatest, we decided we would just come back another day to find the link between the two summits. After this decision was made, we figured it wouldn't hurt to stay on the peak for a while and enjoy it since the weather was good. We looked off each side, I climbed down a short portion of the north face, Chad inspected the Gendarme on the west ridge that prevented us from succeeding during our last attempt. We finally headed back down around 1400. After getting to the false summit I mentioned earlier, we turned and headed down the ridge that goes off to the east toward Lost River (which is technically the standard route). Then dropped down toward where we came from. we continued down to the trailhead and got back to the vehicles at about 1800 hrs without further incident.
