Ascent Trip Report

Once you have found Mahagony Flat you have accomplished a lot. This year there is a road closure to Death Valley that makes the trip to this TH longer & the Ranger's/NPS map is blown up a lot, which confused us, because we are not the greatest navigators. It's easiest to turn east by the Lone Pine Visitor Center (136) where all the folks get their permits & buy gifts. You don't have to drive all the way to Orlancha & then turn on 190. 136 becomes 190 at an intersection a few miles away from Lone Pine. You have to go to the Charcoal Kilns, where the Wild Rose TH starts. Parking & a restroom is there. Right now the cross over just past Panamint Springs on Panamint Valley Rd to Wild Rose Camp is closed, meaning that the drive goes past Towne Pass (4956 ft) then way back down o less than 2000 ft. At just shy of a Kiosk there is just a simple sign saying "Wild Rose" & nothing else. I believe that this is Emigrant Canyon Rd. You will pass over Emigrant Pass at 5318 ft. This road is very curvy & narrow in some places. After Wild Rose Campground, the only available water source out this way, you will travel about 8 miles, I believe then the pavement ends abruptly. Past the Kilns you will see Thorndike Camp & you will also pass a sign saying "only high clearance" 4WD. Since it was dark when we got to Telescope TH & Mahogany Flat, we just parked there rather than drive a bit further & have an actual camp site. It was fine & the stars were incredible. We slept in the car-no tent to take down. Telescope has a great trail that is completely doable. Notice that I didn't say it wasn't steep. There are plenty of switch backs at the top steepest part saving your legs for the down hill trek. In spite of the smoke this year we had a super summit trip.
