Ascent Trip Report

This was definitely my favorite hike, the Pahsimeroi is such a scenic river valley. I made it to camp at the trailhead in the West Fork of the Upper Pahsimeroi very late Thursday night around 2230. This was a very long rough road, but luckily nothing compared to the desert road of where I'm from. I thought for sure I was the only person in the entire valley when I bedded down. When I awoke , however, I found that there was a pickup with a horse trailer parked a little ways from me. I have no idea how it was possible that I didn't hear them come into camp. While filling my coffee mug at the tailgate of my pickup I was startled by a llama tied to the sign! They were all packing up to Pass Lake for the weekend. Needless to say it was a strange morning to start out... I left camp after visiting with my neighbors at about 0630 and hit the summit at 0945. I took the main route following the West Fork of the Pahsimeroi to the base of the mountain and then up the gully on the north west side. I managed to lose the trail where is crosses the stream about half way up. I ended up on a game trail instead that continued on the west side of the river. Regardless of the route taken, you'll come out in the right spot, just head for the large mountain on the southeast end of the draw. I tried piling more rocks on the trail to make it more noticeable. I hung out on the summit for quite a while, descending at about 1136. After some glissading down scree and a small piece of snow still left over. I made it back to the bottom of the scree field where I was finally warm enough to take off my sweater and enjoy some grub. It was freezing, but it was chilly in the shade on the north side before the sun hit it. I then continued on down the river arriving back to the trail head at 1345.
