Ascent Trip Report

I led five members of my hiking club to the Lassen summit, while other sub-groups went to other sites. My fourth time on the summit, which I only did in order to reach this wilderness area HP on the opposite side of the crater.

This was my 100th Calif. wilderness area highpoint!

Only Daniel Schwartz joined me for the WAHP. Once on the crater rim on the main train I set a "go to" for my GPS unit. The WAHP was exactly where I thought it would be - a crag on the far side of the crater.
We followed intermittent use trails as well as utilized some nice stretches of snow pack. It was harder than I expected it to be as we headed pretty much directly across the crater. Some backtracking and side skirting was necessary to avoid a few of the crumbly class 3 chunks of volcanic rock. Eventually we found a use trail traversing up the left side of the summit and scrambled to the HP on the rim. I then went down a gentle sloped ridge until my previously created waypoint was reached, just a half minute or less walk away.
Views were OK. Wildfires in California pretty much caused a moderate haze everywhere. No summit register or benchmark.
We then went to the Lassen HP itself, following use trails pretty much along the crater rim and clockwise. This proved to be much easier than our trek directly across the crater. There was a few feet of easy class 3 just after leaving the WAHP.
