Ascent Trip Report

This was the first peak climbed by Troop 232's 2009 Philmont crew (612-A). On the first day leaving base camp (Day 2) we had set out from Six Mile Gate and hiked to Anasazi Camp for the first night, a distance of only about 2 miles. On Day 3 we hiked to Indian Writings for the interpretive programs, then continued to Old Camp, a total of about 5 miles. The entire hike so far consisted of walking gradually uphill along the floor of a canyon. On Day 4 we walked north out of Old Camp, then turned west to climb up a steep ridge. We followed a no-longer-used 4WD road along the ridgeline, with several small gains and descents, before reaching the summit of Hart Peak in time for lunch. After eating we hiked down to Ponil where we camped that night.

Note that the 'extra elevation' listed accounts for both the terrain covered on the first two days, as well as the extra hills along the ridgeline leading to Hart Peak.
