Ascent Trip Reporti was determined to use the tram to make this hike shorter, but the tram hours really aren't long hike friendly. first tram is 10:40am, i would start hiking at 10:55. the last tram of the day departs the top at 5pm... so i had 6h to do an 8mi hike on varied terrain, with a challenging class 3 summit in the middle.
i started out on the road. there seemed to be a few ways to get to the saddle between emigrant and granite, one of which was on road over emigrant pass, another looked interesting and cut across the north face of emigrant. i wasn't sure where the trailhead for this short-cut was (although my guess was that it started behind a shack on the side of the road)... later in the day i would end up having to use this short-cut to get back to the tram on time. but on the way up i stuck to the road a bit longer until a side trail straight up emigrant presented itself. i was already bored of the road so i took the side trail for some steep climbing to join a different road higher up.
as mentioned in the emigrant report it was an easy bonus barely off the path heading toward granite. i made good time and was on granite 1h7m after starting.
on the final approach to granite i bumped into another hiker, his name i'd learn was mark. on the summit i thought mark said he was off to needle peak next, turns out he meant needle lake. after i indicated i was going for needle and lyon, he decided to join.
stats include the side trip to emigrant-north.
next up is needle.
