Ascent Trip Report

On 8/13/2016, Lou, Gene, Natalie and I went to Olympic NP for a day hike to traverse from Mt Washington then Mt Ellinor. We parked the car at the TH of Mt Ellinor, then, walked down on the road to get to Mt Washington herd path TH besides big boulder. Right from the TH, I was a bit surprised to encounter VERY steep terrain to hike-in.
Gene and Nat are fast hiker, they started to lead. Lou and I followed. Eventually, I saw a kinda 2 herd paths, I took more used herd path. I didn't see Gene and Nat. After for a while, Lou confirmed we're on his GPS tracking data which he recorded in his past trip. We called Gene/Nat. They went to different herd path, and they came back to us by easy bushwhack. We re-gathered again and started move again. Then, soon after, we've got lost in the trees. We did thick bushwhack for a while based on Lou's GPS Tracking data and again, eventually we got back to herd path. Then, we got out from the forest and reached to scree/rocks talus. We went here and there and searched the routes, but, we kept going incorrect path, then came back to another route. Finally, we got to the correct one(hopefully), we continued ascend. With a short rock scrambling, we got to the summit. And we came across Gene and Nat are coming to the summit from the other side of mtn. (funny...) A TONS of bugs at the summit where the summit registration metal box exists. I and Nat signed in, Lou didn't want to get closer to summit after he passed the summit and went down a bit. I don't think Gene even came to the summit ridge because of bugs. We quickly hiked out to the col to eat late lunch.

After eating lunch, our very long traverse started. Instead of ridge top traverse, we took a safer route(there is no really route!) which means we hiked down a lot and skirting the mountain range. We did found herd path, then lost it, then found and lost. We went up and down, up and down. At one point, we had to go down very steep gully with tons of scree. I cautiously went down but slipped. I pass the front person (Nat) and long way slipped, finally stopped 2 inches before hitting Lou. I strained one finger. Butt sliding on talus was pain. Except one finger strain, I was okay on arms and legs. (except scratches here and there). I think my climbing pants helped. (Knees and butt are covered by rubber materials. After looong skirting access, we finally see Mt Ellinor's summit rocks. We had a choice to go around North side to rock scrambling to reach summit, or go down South side to do each Class 2-3 walk and some rock scrambling. We took the latter one as I don't think I could do big rock scrambling with injured finger. We reached to the Mt Ellinor summit, met with ~20 folks + 1 goat.
When we took some pictures, we hiked out. Just 5 mins walk from the summit, we met another male goat. Hiking out was kinda boring to go on switchback routes on and on. We saw one sick hiker 30 mins before reaching the parking lot. He might be getting heat stroke. Some rangers bring medical aids kit. When we finally hiked out completely, we saw ambulance is waiting for that hiker.... I hope he is okay...now.
