Ascent Trip Report

This is an incredibly scenic hike. The approach road was dirt, but passable by passenger cars. A couple of our group got a jump on the ridgeline by climbing South Baldy Mountain first, while the rest of us took the trail to the saddle between South Baldy Mountain and Middle Baldy Mountain. The hiking along the ridge was easy enough until we came to peak 12968 (a peak we called Nutter Butter Peak)- it initially looked technical if climbable at all, but by working around the east side, we were able to find a class 2-3 chute that let to its summit, and from which West Elk Peak was an easy walk.

It should be noted that this peak is considerably more popular than this site would suggest- we saw a register up there with maybe 100 entries over the past decade.
