Ascent Trip ReportDay 1 (of trip)
We started out at the Wallowa Lake Trailhead at about 10:30 AM. Following the signs toward Ice Lake, the trail continues at a low-angle grade for about 3 miles until it crosses the river at the Ice Lake bridge. Then it begins to gain more elevation as it winds through some meadows. There are two switchback sections; one over a rockfall, and the second is the final 900 vertical feet up to the lake. We reached Ice Lake by about 3:30 PM.
We had hired packers to bring our gear up to the lake, but since they hadn't arrived by 7:30, we hiked down close to 1000 vertical feet and found our stuff in a pile next to the trail. Since it was already dark, we pitched camp a little ways off the trail.
Part of our group headed out at about 10 AM back up the switchbacks to the lake. Then we stayed on the rocky trail going to the right around the lake until we came to a small river feeding into the lake. Starting by following the river, there is a steep climber’s trail going up the draw, and it's relatively easy to follow. Once you reach the light grey rock that's visible from the lake, it skirts up and around to the left of a basin just below the summit. There the trail disintegrates but it's fairly easy 2nd and maybe 3rd class up to the top of the rock dome. Off to the left on the ridge is another spot that looks like it could also be the summit; it's unclear which is higher, so we went and tagged both. We summited at around 1:30 PM, and with the mostly clear skies got incredible views of the Wallowa backcountry.
