Ascent Trip Report

3360+ ft.

Tuesday, 8/9/2016

Knowing this should be an easy near-road HP, I decided to race the sun to complete one last county for the day. I left Sentinel Butte and followed my GPS to the HP of Wibaux County.

Previous trip reports were accurate to lead me to the HP. I drove on MT 7, and I turned right when I reached Rattlesnake Creek Lane. This road was dirt and gravel, and it got a bit rough as I approached the tower area. Once I arrived at a point that was before the ascent to the tower but due south of the HP, I found a convenient spot and parked sort of in / sort of out of the roadway.

It was getting dark, but the round trip was not that great. I slipped through the barbed wire fence and followed the GPS north across an easily-traversed field of taller grass. The high contour became more evident as I approached it. Once at the bump, I quickly ascended the 20-30 feet to the top where I found some stones presumably marking the summit. My GPS confirmed that I was at the targeted highest spot. I returned the way I came, and I got back to my car just as it was getting too dark to see much of the surrounding land.

The entire 0.4mi round trip took me only 15-20 minutes, and I completed the trek at about 8:55pm local time. I turned my jeep around, drove back to MT 7, and turned south to drive toward my presumed next target in Fallon County, MT. I ate supper in Baker, MT before continuing the drive south to an overnight destination of Ekalaka, MT.
