Ascent Trip ReportFrom US 97 about 3 miles north of the village of La Pine, turn right (east) at the sign indicating the Newberry Caldera. Drive about 8 to 10 miles on this road until you get to the entrance station for the National Monument, This will be the first mention you will see for the NM. After paying the entrance fee or showing your pass, continue a bit less than 1.5 miles to the signed Paulina Peak road. Turn right (south) and drive to the summit parking lot. This road is paved for the first few hundred feet, but then degenerates into a dirt road, badly washboarded in places. After I'm elected President, all Congressional salaries will be withheld until money is appropriated to finish paving this road.
The summit area is marked by a large flat parking area, an outhouse, and a small pile (perhaps 15 feet high) of dirt and rock, easily ascended. This pile is what is considered by many to be the summit. However, I suspect that the pile was pushed up by Joe the bulldozer operator during the leveling of the summit for the parking area. If you agree with this assessment you will need to wander around to try to stand on anything higher than the parking area. Views are magnificent.
