Ascent Trip Report

On Wednesday morning, June 17, 2009 I got up at 4:30 and was out the door with my dog daisy by 5:00 AM. We drove for about 3 hours until we got to the Williams Lake parking lot near the Taos, New Mexico ski area. The goal for the day was to hike Frazer Mountain, 12,163 feet in elevation. There is a trail that could have been taken from another direction, but I was looking for a fast way up. From the parking lot my GPS said that the peak was about 9 tenths of a mile straight up. It had a vertical ascent of about 2000 feet. I was carrying a 13.5 pound day pack that had food, emergency items and 5 pounds of water. My wire haired fox terrier dog had a little backpack with her leash and some water. We headed straight up. It was very strenuously invigorating. I would not recommend this unless you want a really good workout. While heading up we crossed 2 very old roads that were too over grown even for a 4 wheel drive. There were some cliffs below the peak but it is easy to find a way around them. I did not stop except for a few standing stops and made the top in one hour and 45 minutes. To my surprise we were at the top at 9:45 AM. It was a beautiful sunny day, and as almost always above 12,000 feet it was cold and there was snow in patches. I ate and took some pictures. Close to the top of the peak was a heard of big horn sheep. Directly to the south is an unnamed peak that has an approximate elevation of 12,230 feet. I decided to do that peak also. It took about 30 minutes to go from Frazer Mountain to this other peak. After taking some more pictures, I headed down. It was a steep decent and I made it back to the car at 12:30 PM. The total time was four and a half hours with a very leisure return trip.
