Ascent Trip ReportWell-marked trailhead parking on Rt. 4 easy to find. Trail also well-marked with metal yellow trail markers 2/3 of the way and well maintained--no downed trees to hop over. Much of the route is fairly open offering views both because of meadows and the lingering effect of fire damage (but route would be pretty sunny on a hot day). Only about 100 feet elevation gain over the first half mile, then gradually steeper with about 550 feet elevation gain in the last 3/4 of a mile. Panoramic views of the Valle Caldera, canyons in the Bandolier and south to Sandia Crest. It feels like you are higher than you actually are. A very enjoyable hike with only moderate climb overall--you usually have to work harder for views like this. |
