Ascent Trip ReportTook tour boat to Wizard Island. Would recommend taking shuttle boat ($32) rather than tour boat ($57) because we didn't feel the extra $25 was worth it for the tour, although it was interesting.
From the dock, there is a nice trail (starts out rougher with lava) to the summit of the cinder cone (2.2mi rt, 760'). It is simple to walk around the rim and also to go down to the bottom of the center. There was still some snow remaining when we were there.
After descending, we hiked on the trail to Fumarole Bay (1.7mi rt, 150') and took a dip (30 seconds?). Water is cold but super clear and beautiful. Coast is all sharp lava. Would have been nice to have water shoes.
The boat leaves you on the island for 3 hours before returning to pick you up, which is a good amount of time to do the above in a relaxed manner.
