Ascent Trip ReportOne of two direct routes. This one has the benefit of continuous views of the lake compared to the West Ridge (currently under road construction and without a pullout).
The trail briefly follows the rim trail and a boottrack veers of obviously and directly towards Hillman. A web of boot tracks follows the rim all the way to the top. It's open country so any option is acceptable. I skirted the rim on the way up but followed it all the way down.
The summit block is a fun 3rd class scramble. Anyone with moderate confidence can easily pick their way to the top without any 4th class by taking a few seconds to choose each move - there are boot tracks everywhere and no established trail. Veering to the West ridge ensures no exposure. I stayed lake-side and enjoyed the airyness with relative safety and ease.
I rushed this summit. Double the time for more appropriate estimate.
1/1 ACCESS - park and climb
1/2 REMOTENESS (Popularity, Sight/Sound) - one of the busier overlooks. I was the only person on Hillman though.
0/1 CONDITION - the NP should really establish an official trail. With such easy access it's begging for advanced erosion...
2/3 VARIETY (Flora and Fauna, Geological, Terrain) - fun quick combo of cross-country and scramble and includes stellar views
3/3 VIEWS - could you rate anything in Crater Lake anything less?!
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
