Ascent Trip ReportCrafts Peak to Grays bushwhacking and cross country expedition. This direct route to four peaks hike was very, very difficult and not recommended for trail-only hikers. Pants, gators, long sleeves and gloves recommended. Followed the HPS route starting at Lake View Point Saddle and found a use trail to about 2/3 of the route to Crafts, where the dirt road was found. The road takes you right to the foot of the final 100 feet of summit block. From Crafts to Peak 8268 and onto Butler Peak the direct route is a nasty bushwhack and boulder hopping festival. while it is not much more than a mile as the crow flies, it took us two hours to make the traverse. Mr. Lantz, the volunteer fire lookout at the Butler peak tower, said he had never known anyone who had made that journey. Ate lunch with Mr. Lantz, got our Squirrel Cards and made our way to Grays Peak with no real idea how we would get there. The road to and from Butlers was where we saw the first hikers of the day and we shared the space with a few MTB riders as well. We left the road to make a direct route to Grays and found more heavy brush even though we were on a deer trail for much of the way. Several creek crossings ensued and the best way to get around ended up being a walk on top of fallen trees. Eventually, we joined the Gray's Peak trail about 1/3 mile from the summit and celebrated an amazing four-peak day. The 3.5 miles down Gray's to the trailhead seemed so easy now, but we still had to get back to the car parked some 8 miles down Hyw 18. A nice fellow hiker from San Bernardino gave us a lift. Twelve miles in all with most of it cross country. Epic adventure, but not for the faint of heart.
