Ascent Trip ReportHow I chose this peak: Frank and I wanted to try a non-technical 20,000' peak. Based on my reading Ancohuma would not be very technical.
The Plan: Six days on the mountain, reaching the summit on July 4th.
The climb: During the drive my stomach became tight and I lost my appetite. Day one should have been easy, but I struggled though the 1.7 miles. I was not able to eat and all I wanted to do was sleep. That night I woke up with worsening stomach problems. In the morning I couldn't eat breakfast and felt like I was going to throw up. I made the decision to go back down the mountain. Frank and our guide continued. Later in the day I was picked up by another guide and returned to Sorota. The next three days I was so sick I barely left my hotel room. The sickness was not altitude related.
This was very unfortunate, but part of life. It's over a week later and I'm back in North Carolina writing this and still sick from this trip. UPDATE: Ended up coughing into the beginning of September from the bug I caught on this trip.
Frank and the guide did not reach the summit, turning around at around 20,100' of elevation. They said the glaciers were covered in pinnacles, and there were several crevasses. What caused them to turn around was in a section of ice climbing clouds settled in and heavy winds and snow came in forcing them to turn around.
