Ascent Trip Report

I’ve been on a mountaineering high the past couple of months climbing quite a few peaks around Washington and Oregon. My friends and I were attempting Mt. Adams for the first time. Even though we could’ve done a single-day push, we decided to take it easy and camp out. Starting from Cold Springs Campground around 1 PM on Saturday, we followed the winter route and got to Lunch Counter by 6 PM. The winds picked up quite a bit in the evening and it felt like the tent would be blown away several times during the night. Our summit push the next morning started at 6.45 AM and we got to the top a little before 11 AM. During the long slog to Piker’s peak, one of the guys had to turn back because of nausea that had hit him the night before. Moreover, the winds were deafening and would rock you back and forth. While coming down to Piker’s peak, the snow was icy enough to prevent glissades. However, past Piker’s peak, we glissaded the epic 2000’ chute all the way to Lunch Counter. It helped us get back to camp by 1 PM. Going back, we decided to take the summer route and made it back to the TH by 4.20 PM.

Key stat of the day – 3000+ ft of glissading
